President Truman Campaigning

October 02, 1948
Source: National Archives

A month before the 1948 presidential election, President Harry S. Truman campaigned in Washington, D.C.  Largely due to divisions within the Democratic Party, Truman was expected to lose the presidential race. However, Truman won 303 electoral votes to opponent Thomas Dewey’s 189; this surprised many including the publishers of the Chicago Tribune who had already printed an election coverage edition with headline “Dewey Defeats Truman.”
