President Wilson’s First Inauguration

March 04, 1913
Source: The Library of Congress

On March 4, 1913, Woodrow Wilson, center, gave his first inauguration speech on the east portico of the U.S. Capitol. Wilson's defeat of incumbent President William Howard Taft was due in large part to the spilt in Republican votes between Taft and former President Theodore Roosevelt. Four years later, Wilson was reelected in the midst of World War I and a reunited Republican Party.
