November 20, 1962
Source: National Archives

On November 20, 1962, President John F. Kennedy held a press conference in the auditorium of the State Department in Washington, D.C., and announced the lifting of the naval blockade of Cuba. The blockade was a response to the Soviet placement of nuclear missiles in Cuba. The announcement marked the end of weeks of negotiations between Kennedy and Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev.
