The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was created in April 1935 as one of the major initiatives of President Franklin Roosevelt’s Second New Deal, the post-Great Depression reform and recovery package. Under the leadership of Harry Hopkins, the WPA aimed to increase employment for Americans by developing cultural projects and increasing the construction of public infrastructure.
