November 05, 1948
Source: National Archives

On November 5, 1948, President Harry Truman, right foreground, celebrated his reelection as President at the White House with, from left, Vice President-Elect Alben Barkley, Barkley’s daughter Mrs. Max Truitt, Truman’s daughter Margaret, and First Lady Bess Truman.  Surprising the pundits who predicted a Republican victory for Governor Thomas Dewey of New York, President Truman was reelected with 303 electoral votes to his opponent’s 189.
