Sarah Childress Polk

Source: The Library of Congress

On January 1, 1824, James Polk married fellow Tennessean, Sarah Childress.  Partly due to the fact that the pair never had children, Mrs. Polk took an active role in her husband’s political career.  As First Lady, she fulfilled her ceremonial duties, but was far more interested in political affairs.  Known for her intellect, devotion, and morality, Sarah Polk was well respected as First Lady.
