Second Term Decision

February 29, 1956
Source: National Archives

President Dwight Eisenhower, seated at desk, was extremely popular for ending the Korean War and the economic prosperity that followed, but personal indecision and health concerns—chiefly a heart attack in 1955—called into question whether he would run for reelection.  On February 29, 1956, however, Eisenhower settled months of speculation by announcing that he would seek a second term as President.
