The Academical Village

Source: Dan Addison and U.Va. Public Affairs

The University of Virginia was constructed upon Thomas Jefferson’s vision of an “academical village” in which intellectual development would be immersed with daily life. In Jefferson’s plans, each of the ten Pavilions was to serve as both a living quarters for professors and classroom for students. These Pavilions were connected by a row of student rooms that flanked both sides.
