The “Dark Horse” Candidate

Source: The Library of Congress

In the presidential election of 1852, the Democratic Party was so divided, it could not agree on a prominent candidate. The party turned to a little-known political figure, Franklin Pierce of New Hampshire, who was handsome, sociable, a fine speaker, a Mexican-American War veteran, and a proslavery northerner. He defeated the Whig Party candidate, General Winfield Scott.
