Although President John Adams established the Library of Congress, Thomas Jefferson played a prominent role in laying the foundational structure of the Library by creating the post of Librarian of Congress and establishing the Joint Committee on the Library. After retiring from public service, Jefferson sold 6,487 volumes from his personal library collection to the federal government for a price of $23,940.
