The Reagans and the Gorbachevs
On December 8, 1987, Ronald and Nancy Reagan welcomed Mikhail and Raisa Gorbachev to a state dinner held in their honor. Earlier that day, Gorbachev and Reagan signed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. The treaty eliminated all intermediate-range conventional and nuclear ground-launched missiles. It marked the beginning of the end for the arms race that had lasted more than four decades.
