Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt sit in the Oval Office in 1933. During the Great Depression, Roosevelt’s policies as governor of New York met with great success. These achievements, coupled with his family name and his previous nomination for vice president, made him a viable choice for the Democratic presidential nomination. In 1932, Roosevelt won election with the promise of a “new deal for the American people.”
