Tomb of James K. Polk

Source: The Library of Congress

When James Polk left the presidency in 1849, he embarked on an extensive tour of the southern states. At the end of the trip, he moved into his recently purchased estate in Nashville. However, he died just three months after leaving office on June 15, 1849. He was originally buried on his estate but his body was later moved to a tomb at the state capitol in Nashville, Tennessee.
