Washington’s Farewell Address

Nearing the end of his second term, George Washington presented his Farewell Address to the nation in September 1796. The President urged his fellow citizens to remain a unified nation and warned against the consequences of “foreign entanglements.” As a tribute to his service, Washington’s Farewell Address is read aloud every year in the U.S. Senate
