Richard L. Russell is a professor in the Near East-South Asia Center for Strategic Studies at the National Defense University. Russell taught international relations to undergraduates as a teaching assistant at the University of Virginia and in 1994 was a fellow at the Miller Center of Public Affairs. He served for 17 years as a political-military analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency, where he analyzed security issues in the Middle East and Europe. He is the recipient of numerous CIA Exceptional Performance Awards, two of these for his work during the Gulf and Kosovo wars. He has published numerous works in the fields of international relations and American foreign policy.
