Hugh Pope has reported from Turkey, the Middle East and Central Asia for more than 20 years. Since 1997, he has been a staff correspondent of the Wall Street Journal. He previously wrote for publications including the London Independent and the Los Angeles Times, and reported freelance for radio stations including the BBC World Service, CBS and NPR. He lives in Istanbul, his base since 1987. He has lived and worked in Iran, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt, and has reported from more than 30 countries. His talk focused on Iraq, which he has visited 20 times since 1985. His latest trip was in October 2003.
