Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience at Washington College, where he explores the early republic, the rise of democracy, and the ways in which the founding era continues to shape American culture. Widmer was a senior adviser to President Clinton and director of speechwriting at the National Security Council. His latest book is Martin Van Buren, a new biography of the first party boss.
