The Devil We Know: Dealing with the New Iranian Superpower

Robert Baer Robert Baer

Speaker: Robert Baer

Date: March 30, 2009

Description:

ROBERT BAER has publicly acknowledged working in India, Beirut, Tajikistan, and Salah-al-Din in Kurdish northern Iraq during his 20-year career as a CIA officer. During the mid-1980s, Baer was sent to Iraq to organize opposition to Saddam Hussein, but was recalled and investigated for allegedly conspiring to assassinate the Iraqi leader. George Clooney's character in Syriana (for which he won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award) was loosely based on Baer, who, according to Seymour Hersh, "was considered perhaps the best on-the-ground field officer in the Middle East."
