Glen Hastedt is a professor of international affairs at James Madison University who has a number of publications about U.S. intelligence and the intelligence community. Before giving an analysis of the past successes and failures of the CIA, Mr. Hastedt describes the challenges facing the U.S. in the post-Cold War era and the need for reform in the CIA to address these new challenges. Rick Russell, a graduate student with 10 years of CIA experience and Kurt van der Walde, a graduate student who has worked for the Department of Defense, Congress and a think tank, also give their assessments of the CIA. Dr. Hastedt answers questions regarding the media?s influence on the intelligence community, the economic function of the CIA and budget limitations.
