Speaker: Clifford P. Case
Date: March 1, 1979
Case (R-New Jersey) was elected in 1944 to the House and in 1954 to the Senate. A progressive legislator, Case refused to support Goldwater?s nomination for presidential candidate. Case joined the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 1965 and initially supported military involvement in Indochina. After touring Vietnam, however, he withdrew his support of the war and heavily criticized Johnson for his dishonesty and policy decisions.
