Appointed by Johnson as the Chairman of the Commission on Heart Disease, Cancer and Stroke. Background in medical research, though which he became acquainted with Johnson while he was in Congress. Served as chairman of a special ad hoc committee in the National Democratic Party for advising the Platform Committee on the health problem, thus working with the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations; involved in the passage of the Medicare Bill.
