Labor leader who served as president of the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union (ILGWU)(1932-1966), establishing benefits for his members that other unions eventually adopted. He was involved in humanitarian projects and promoted the adoption of an antiracketeering code in 1957 by the AFL-CIO. During the 1950s and 1960s he served on several government boards and acted as a consultant to the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
