Mayor of Atlanta, GA (1961-1969) elected with black support against the arch-segregationist Lester Maddox. He used his influence to integrate many of the city?s public facilities. During tumultuous events of 1966 and 1967, Allen denounced black militants for inciting disturbances, such as Stokely Carmichael of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.
