Description
President of the University of Notre Dame (1952-87). Member of the United States Civil Rights Commission (1957-1972). Hesburgh was active in the anti-Vietnam War movement and strived to improve the treatment of illegal aliens. He took a ?hard? stance on the subject of campus disorders in the late 1960s. During the Johnson Adminstration, also served on the National Science Board and the President?s General Advisory Committee on Foreign Assistance.
