Date: August 6, 1969
Description
Democratic Senator from Minnesota (1949-1965) who worked closely with Lyndon B. Johnson. After losing his presidential run in the 1960 and becoming a majority whip, he became the Kennedy Administration?s most aggressive ally in the Senate. He helped smooth the presidential transition by advising Johnson in the aftermath of Kennedy?s assassination and serving as his link to liberals and intellectuals. As Vice President of the United States (1965-1969), Humphrey chaired numerous advisory bodies and sold the Administration?s policy to Congress and the public.
