Governor of Mississippi (1964-1968). During the Meredith integration crisis at Ole Miss in Oxford, Lieutenant Governor Paul Johnson (1960-1964) supported Governor Barnett?s defiance of the U. S. Supreme Court. Despite that, Paul Johnson encouraged amelioration of black civil rights during his terms as governor. During his administration, the state also reached a milestone in its economic development.
