First Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley (1952?1958) and President of the University of California (1958?1967). During the McCarthy era in 1949, Kerr protested the firing of university officials who refused to sign the anti-communist loyalty oath required by the regents of the University. During the1964 student Free Speech Movement, he was criticized by regents and others for responding too leniently to the unrest. This perceived leniency was involved in Ronald Reagan's election as Governor of California in 1966.
