Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (1958-1961). Assisted James Forrestal in the creation of the Central Intelligence Agency and served as the director of Central Intelligence (1961-1965). As Johnson?s chief intelligence officer, McCone became increasingly involved in Vietnam policymaking. Upon resigning from the CIA owing to the disagreement with Johnson over centralization of intelligence operations, McCone headed a commission to investigate the major riot in the Watts section of Los Angeles.
