Labor leader who served as president of AFL-CIO (1955-1979). In the mid 1960s, George Meany was a friend of Lyndon B. Johnson and cooperated closely with the U.S. government on the Civil Rights Act, the tax cut of 1963-1964, and the medicare plan of 1965, as well as the minimum wage increase of 1966. George Meany also supported Johnson?s policy in Vietnam and endores him in the presidential race of 1968.
