Republican Senator from South Dakota (1949-1972) who was acting chairman of the Un-American Activities Committee that was investigating the Alger Hiss Case. He voted consistently with the conservative coalition of Southern Democrats and Republicans, supporting it most of the time during the Johnson Administration. Despite his conservative views on most domestic issues, he backed civil rights measures, farms subsidy legislation, and bills on cooperation with the allies.
