Career officer at the U.S. Department of State beginning in 1946. Served as the U.S. Ambassador to South Vietnam (1961-1963) and is the author of the book From Trust to Tragedy: The Political Memoirs of Frederick Nolting, Kennedy's Ambassador to Diem's Vietnam. Nolting was a staunch defender of South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem who was later overthrown by a U.S.-supported coup.
