Democratic Representative from Texas (1929-1976) who discusses his long association with Lyndon B. Johnson. Chairman of the Banking and Currency Committee (1963-1975). Known for his attacks on the power of large commercial banks and the policies of the Federal Reserve Board. Patman voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, but refrained from any criticism of President Johnson himself, generally aiding in the passage of his programs and supporting his policy in Vietnam.
