Chairman of the State Department?s Japan-Korea Secretariat and Special Assistant to the director of the Office of Far Eastern Affairs in the late 1940s. In 1961, Reischauer was named Ambassador to Japan, a post that he held until 1966. Under Johnson, Reischauer was highly critical of the American strategy in the Far-East. While he supported American objectives in Vietnam, he strongly denounced the bombing. He strongly advocated the de-escalation of military forces in Asia and called for the establishment of formal relations with the People?s Republic of China.
