Description
Governor of Georgia (1963-1967) who had served in the Georgia State Assembly and Senate in the 1950s, becoming known as a racial moderate for his advocacy of the bill that prohibited the closing of public schools as a means of avoiding integration. As governor, however, Sanders opposed the civil rights initiatives of presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Sanders supported the U.S. efforts in Vietnam, but his primary goal as governor was to promote the economic growth of Georgia.
