Director of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency at the time of the interview in 1969. Prior to that, Gerard Smith served as Special Adviser to the Secretary of State for MLF negotiations. Also served previously as Director of the Policy Planning Staff (1957-1961) and Special Assistant for Atomic Affairs to John Foster Dulles (1954-1957). He was also associated with the AEC (1950-1954). Discusses his early contact with Johnson while working under Dulles, issues that emerged during the Kennedy Administration, and his association with the MLF negotiations.
