John Sparkman

Speaker: Senator John Sparkman
Date: October 5, 1968
Description
First elected to the House in 1936 as a Democrat from Alabama, Sparkman won a special election to the Senate in 1946. While Sparkman supported liberal domestic programs, he was staunchly opposed to civil rights legislation. As Governor Wallace?s influence grew, Sparkman?s support of many liberal domestic programs waned. Sparkman, however, continued to support many of Johnson?s urban housing programs. He consistently supported Johnson?s foreign aid programs and the war in Vietnam.
