Gen. Anthony C. Zinni, U.S.M.C. (Ret.), has served in more than seventy countries since joining the Marine Corps in 1961. From 1997 to 2000, he was commander-in-chief of the United States Central Command, in charge of all American troops in the Middle East. Following his retirement from the Marine Corps, the Bush administration appointed him to one of its highest diplomatic posts' special envoy to the Middle East. In 2005 he was named President of International Operations of M. I. C. Industries, Inc. Tom Clancy co-authored the story of Zinni's career, entitled Battle Ready (2004).
