Dexter Filkins was a war correspondent in The New York Times' Baghdad bureau from March 2003 until August 2006. In 2001 and 2002 he covered the war in Afghanistan, and then was the Times' bureau chief in Istanbul. In 2002 he was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize for his Afghanistan coverage. Many of his peers consider him the finest war correspondent of his generation and hail his coverage of the fighting in and around Fallujah as the best to come out of the Iraq war. Filkins has a master's degree in international relations from Oxford and completed his undergraduate work at the University of Florida.
