John F. Kennedy

The most significant published collection of Kennedy papers is the official Public Papers published by the National Archives. The National Archives edition is limited to Kennedy's three years in the White House and includes only official public messages (e.g. speeches, press conferences, public statements). In addition to the Public Papers, there exist a number of single volume collections of Kennedy papers that may be of interest to researchers.

  • Public Papers of the Presidents: John F. Kennedy (1961-1963) 3 vols. These papers are also available online through the The American Presidency Project at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
  • JFK Wants to Know: Memos From the President's Office, 1961-1963. A selection of White House memos culled from Kennedy's office files at the John F. Kennedy Library.
  • “Let the Word Go Forth:” The Speeches, Statements, and Writings of John F. Kennedy. Theodore Sorenson's (special counsel to Kennedy) selective collection of Kennedy's speeches. Organized by subject and includes some pre-Presidential material.
  • Kennedy and the Press: The News Conferences.
  • The Speeches, Remarks, Press Conferences, and Statements of Senator John F. Kennedy, August 1 through November 7, 1960.

For non-published material, the best source for Kennedy papers is the John F. Kennedy Library. Much of the more important material from Kennedy's Presidential files is available on microfilm at research institutions throughout the United States, including Alderman Library at the University of Virginia through which the Scripps Library has access; please contact the Scripps Library for more information about microfilm location and availability.
