‘America First’: An exploration

‘America First’: An exploration

Listen to a 30-minute history of the phrase and its uses in American political life

When President Trump used the phrase "America First" in his 2016 campaign and 2017 inaugural address, it was unclear if he was referencing its unique history in American political culture. After all, he cited World War II as a prime example of putting America First even though the America First Committee was formed in 1940 expressly to keep the United States out of it.

The Miller Center explored the history and meaning of the phrase in a 2018 conference. In this audio program, we pull together learnings from that event and archival audio to see if we can find a common thread woven through the many iterations of America First.
