Dr. Jonathan R. Crowe, MD, MPH, MSc is a Miller Center faculty senior fellow and assistant professor of neurology and public health sciences at the University of Virginia. He is a practicing neurologist who treats patients with strokes and other neurological disorders at the UVA Health University Medical Center and across the Commonwealth of Virginia through UVA’s Telestroke Program.
In addition to his clinical roles, Crowe regularly works with federal and state policymakers on the impact that health policies have on patients, their families, and their communities. He serves on the American Academy of Neurology Health Policy Subcommittee and is a graduate of the American Academy of Neurology’s Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Forum. He was also recently appointed to the Medical Society of Virginia’s Advocacy Committee.
Crowe's current fields of research include the impact of stroke, dementia, and other neurological diseases on the U.S. health care system, health care prices, digital health, and the intersection of democracy, capitalism, and health care.
Crowe earned a BA in Spanish and foreign affairs from UVA, where he volunteered in the Miller Center’s Presidential Recordings Program. He also earned a masters degree in global politics from the London School of Economics and a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. A Georgia native, Crowe attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia and was given an Excellence in Public Health Award by the U.S. Public Health Service and U.S. Surgeon General upon his graduation.
Prior to returning to UVA to join the faculty, Crowe completed his adult neurology residency training and vascular neurology fellowship at Harvard Medical School’s Mass General Brigham. He served as chief resident in his final year of residency. He also was co-founder and co-director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Neurology Center for Health Policy and Advocacy, the first and only health policy center in an academic neurology department in the world. He testified before the Massachusetts state legislature multiple times in support of health reform.
Crowe has been published in a variety of peer reviewed journals such as The Neuroradiology Journal, JMIR Formative Research, and the health policy journal Inquiry. His writing has also appeared in multiple popular media outlets, including an op-ed co-authored with U.S. Senator Roger Marshall on the impact of inflation on patient care.
