The Students Have Had Enough

That high school students have emerged as political activists may come as a surprise. When people talk about student activism, they almost always focus on college students; when they talk about school politics, they almost always focus on parents pushing for changes to curriculum. But while they’re seldom the center of the stories we tell about politics, high school students have repeatedly found ways to exercise their citizenship, even before they have full access to their rights.

On Tuesday, Blackmon brought in UVa history professor Will Hitchcock, who has written two books on President Dwight Eisenhower. “So, what’s really new here?” Blackmon asked Hitchcock at the start of the program, holding up Hitchcock’s newest book. “And, this thing you refer to in the title, “The Age of Eisenhower,” did that really exist?” “I sure hope so, because I spent a long time trying to make the argument,” Hitchcock joked. “I have to say I wasn’t sure what I would find, but Eisenhower was, without a doubt, one of the most consequential presidents since Franklin Roosevelt.”

You could feel the panic wafting off the presidential Twitter feed. In less than 24 hours, Donald Trump spit out more than a dozen tweets in response to the sweeping indictments handed down by the Justice Department’s special counsel on Friday. Thirteen Russians and three Russian companies face charges of criminally interfering with the 2016 presidential election. And while the charges did not touch on the issue of collusion with the Trump campaign, the President quickly lashed out on Twitter, attacking everyone from his National Security Adviser to Barack Obama to the FBI.

Miller Center Releases Index To Secret Presidential Recordings

UVA’s Miller Center of Public Policy has just released an index to Lyndon Johnson’s private White House Tapes on the 50th anniversary of America’s trouble year of 1968, that ended with his decision not to seek re-election, and reveals President Trump is not the first President to attack the press. The Miller Center’s Guian McKee said, “Presidential suspicion of the media goes way back, really probably to the beginning of the institution.”
