Melody Barnes served as assistant to President Obama and director of the White House Domestic Policy Council from 2009 to January 2012, and recently contributed to the Miller Center’s First Year 2017. Prior to her work in the White House, Barnes served as senior domestic policy advisor to the Obama for America campaign and was executive vice president for policy at the Center for American Progress. From 1998 until 2003, Barnes served as chief counsel to then Senator Edward M. Kennedy on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Barnes began her career as an attorney with Shearman & Sterling in New York City.
John M. Bridgeland is president and CEO of Civic Enterprises, a public policy firm in Washington, D.C. Previously, Bridgeland served as assistant to the president under George W. Bush, director of the USA Freedom Corps, and director of White House Domestic Policy Council. He also served as a teaching fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and has done extensive research on America’s high school drop-out crisis.
