Todd Stern

Todd Stern is a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a nonresident distinguished fellow at the Asia Society. He served from January 2009 to April 2016 as the special envoy for climate change at the Department of State, where he was President Obama's chief climate negotiator. He also served as assistant to President Clinton from 1993 to 1999, coordinating the administration's initiative on global climate change from 1997 to 1999. From 1999 to 2001, Stern was counselor to Secretary of the Treasury Lawrence Summers and supervised Treasury’s anti-money laundering strategy. From 2001 to 2008, Stern was a partner at the law firm WilmerHale. He has lectured at Yale University and Brown University and has written for publications including the Washington Post, the Atlantic, The American Interest, and The Washington Quarterly.  He has also appeared on CNN, BBC, MSNBC, and NPR, among others. Stern graduated from Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School.

Michael J. Lenox (moderator)

Michael J. Lenox is a faculty senior fellow at the Miller Center, where he serves as an academic co-director of the Project on Democracy and Capitalism. His primary appointment is as the Tayloe Murphy Professor of Business Administration at the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia. From 2016 to 2023, he served as Darden's senior associate dean and chief strategy officer and is currently special advisor to the dean for strategic initiatives. He helped found and served as the inaugural president of the multiple-university Alliance for Research on Corporate Sustainability, helping organizations as diverse as General Motors, Dominion Energy, NASA, and the NCAA harness the competitive advantages of environmental sustainability. Lenox holds a BA and an MS in systems engineering from the University of Virginia and a PhD in technology management and policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
