While in Afghanistan, Pottinger spearheaded an investigation into problems with the U.S. intelligence effort, which resulted in the 2010 report, “Fixing Intel: A Blueprint for Making Intelligence Relevant in Afghanistan.” A recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, Pottinger finished active duty in 2010 to resume civilian life as a writer.
