Thomas McCarthy has published extensively in social and political philosophy, especially in the area of critica theory. His recent work has focused on how conceptions of "race" and "development" have been used to structure hierarchical relations of power, property, and recognition. He is currently at work on a book entitled "Difference and Development: Philosophical Reflections on Race and Empire."
