ALAN JACOBS is associate professor in the department of political science at the University of British Columbia.  He specializes in the comparative politics of advanced industrialized democracies and the politics of public policy, with particular emphasis on the welfare state. His first book, Governing for the Long Term: Democracy and the Politics of Investment, was the winner of the American Political Science Association award for the Best Book in Comparative Politics; the APSA award for the Best Book Developing or Applying Qualitative Methods; and the International Political Science Association prize for the Best Book in Comparative Policy and Administration.
