Welcome to the 5th annual James C. Lehrer Lecture—named in honor of the late Jim Lehrer, PBS NewsHour cofounder and former anchor who reported on every presidency from John F. Kennedy to Barack Obama. Lehrer was also a longtime member of the Miller Center's Governing Council.

John Dickerson, former coanchor of CBS Evening News, will discuss the midterm elections, the war in Iran, the state of the media, and efforts to experiment with new ways to deliver the news.

John Dickerson

John Dickerson is a journalist, author, and interviewer, most recently the coanchor of the CBS Evening News and chief political analyst for CBS News. During his 16 years at CBS, he served as senior national correspondent, contributor to CBS News Sunday Morning, and cohost of CBS This Morning. He was also the moderator of Face the Nation, the network’s chief Washington correspondent, and a correspondent for 60 Minutes. A contributing writer at The Atlantic, Dickerson has cohosted Slate’s Political Gabfest for 20 years and also hosts the podcasts Whistlestop, a podcast on presidential history, and Navel Gazing, drawn from his 35 years of notebooks. He began his career at Time magazine, spending four years as its White House correspondent, and later served as Slate’s chief political correspondent. He has covered nine presidential campaigns, moderated two CBS presidential debates during the 2016 campaign, and is the author of three books, including On Her Trail, Whistlestop: My Favorite Stories from Presidential Campaign History, and The Hardest Job in the World: The American Presidency. His many honors include the Ford Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the Presidency and the 2025 Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in TV Political Journalism. A University of Virginia graduate, Dickerson lives in New York City and serves on the board of Covenant House International.

William Antholis (moderator)

William J. Antholis has served as director and CEO of UVA's Miller Center of Public Affairs since January 2015. In that time, the Miller Center has strengthened its position as the leading nonpartisan research institution on the American presidency and worked with scholars across the University of Virginia to deliver vital research to policymakers and the public. Before coming to the Miller Center, Antholis served as managing director at the Brookings Institution from 2004 to 2014, working directly with Brookings's president and vice presidents. Antholis is the author of Inside Out India and China: Local Politics Go Global (2013) and co-author (with Strobe Talbott) of Fast Forward: Ethics and Politics in the Age of Global Warming (2010). He has published articles, book chapters, and opinion pieces on U.S. politics, U.S. foreign policy, international organizations, the G8, climate change, and trade.

George Martin (introduction)

George K. Martin, the chair of the Miller Center's Governing Council, is the former managing partner of the McGuire Woods’ Richmond office. He practices law in the areas of construction and commercial real estate. He has more than 25 years of experience handling construction-related transactions, including joint ventures, public-private partnerships, and project finance transactions. In 2013, Martin became the first African American rector of the University of Virginia, a position first held by Thomas Jefferson. Martin earned his BA from the University of Virginia and his JD from Howard University School of Law.
