RUSSELL RILEY is White Burkett Miller Center Professor of Ethics and Institutions at the University of Virginia, where he co-chairs the Presidential Oral History Program. He has recorded oral histories at the Miller Center on every presidency since Gerald Ford’s and has published scholarly interpretations based on these interviews in eight books, including the current volume with Oxford. His popular commentary on the modern presidency has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Atlantic, as well as other US and international periodicals. He has also been a program director of the Salzburg Seminar, a visiting professor at Sciences Po-Lyon, and a By-Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge.
