Event Details
Takakazu Kuriyama, the Japanese Ambassador to America, discusses US-Japanese relations. Ambassador Kuriyama attributes the recent downturn in Japanese-American relations to the end of the Cold War in which both countries faced a potential hostile power, and economic competition. In this forum he praises the long standing friendly relations between the two countries while stressing the need to maintain and cultivate friendly relations due to economic and security interdependency. Following his presentation, Kuriyama answers questions concerning cultural differences between America and Japan, the legacy of World War Two and its effect on Japanese international relations, Japanese regional hegemony, the rise of China?s power, the influence of MITI on Japanese companies, and APEC.
